Pacquiao vs Broner Live
The time is almost upon us as hall-of-fame Filipino Manny Pacquiao returns to Las Vegas to take on Adrien Broner at the MGM Grand on 19 January on ITV4.
Pacquaio, who made his debut almost 24 years ago, will be defending his WBA world welterweight title in the 70th fight of his professional career.
It’s a battle between an eight-division world champion and a four-division world champion, although Broner, despite garnering multiple accolades, has wasted the best of his career due to antics and distractions outside of the ring.
Pacquiao scored his first knockout in nine years last summer against Lucas Matthyse, after returning from a shock defeat to Australia’s Jeff Horn, while Broner drew to former world champion Jessie Vargas.
Floyd Mayweather, Broner’s former mentor, will be ringside for the bout with a potential money-spinning rematch against Pacquiao later in the year being mooted.
Pacquiao is 11 years Broner’s senior, and already fighting Oscar De La Hoya by the time Broner made his debut. And yet, somehow, it’s Broner who seems to be the more shot fighter, as he has not seemed mentally all the way in the game for a long time. As I said above, Pacquiao looked good in his last fight. Certainly not in his prime, but the closest to it in awhile. That should give him the advantage in speed, in power, and clearly in ring smarts. Look for him to take a few rounds to slow Broner down, then really take over by about the 4th. Like against Matthysse, a late TKO is certainly possible here, though Broner, for all his faults, is a durable fighter who has never been stopped. But I see Broner getting frustrated as this fight goes on and getting schooled in the latter half.
